The Red Smed Annual 'End of the Year' Yearly Top of the Pops Chart

 

Many people say to me 'Hey Red, is it that time of year again when you tell us which of your songs are the most popular?'. Many more say to me 'You sad man, almost no-one looks at these anyway. Why don't you write some new ones?'. Quickly followed by 'Er, no, i mean, yes keep looking at the old ones, yes that's best'. But for me Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without it being Christmas. So Let's have an exciting look back over the year. Er, 'pop pickers'...

This year, because I AM as stupid as I look, I've decided to do 2 charts. The ongoing accumulator of hits over the years..but the truth is nothing else is going to catch up with 'The Partisan Song' which has 388,783 hits. So that'll still be at number 1 when i drop dead and forget to give my passwords to my daughter. Who's already considering changing her name. But the top 10 of all time are as follows

Which you'll agree is an interesting selection. However, probably a more interesting way of looking at it is which song has the most hits in the last 12 months. And then there's 'some' surprises.

At number 1 is LEON TROTSKY (Red Smed) with 221 but at No.2 is DON'T YOU MARRY A COMMUNIST with 179. Now this is a new video which I put up due to former band member Dave Hanna sadly dying. And both of these songs have an Atilla the Stockbroker connection as he plays Trotsky in his set and played 'Communist' at his wedding!

Katyusha (Red Smed) is at number 3 with 148 hits and Partisan song at number 4 with 104. However, last year You Tube 'restricted' this video. For no good reason as far as I could see. 

 At 5 with 94 hits during the past year is the Dangerous Brothers classic 'SECRET SEVEN', going back to 1981 when we were signed to a record label that paid us £1 and wouldn't let me play this song for the next 10 years. Huh, Capitalism! What's it like! No 6 is BRIDGWATER a song I wrote about Bridgwater. 88 hits in the past year and another featuring the Red Smed band.

At no 7 is the Sedgemorons single DROP DEAD DARLING with 80 hits. Maybe this is due to a sudden interest in the band and song as it was featured on a Cherry Red 'Best of 1985' box set during the year? Then in at number 8 is a bit of a surprise it's my classical piano piece WESTOVER RHAPSODY with 66 hits (and not all of them me).

At no 9 it's another Sedgemorons track 'I NEED A GIRLFRIEND (the original B-Side of Drop Dead Darling) with 63 hits  - and for connoisseurs this film includes not just rare footage of us performing at the Art Centre in 1985 but also some footage i found from the old brickworks which we used in a scene from the 1986 Brickyard Strike Play!!  Then finally at no 10 with 60 hits is (maybe oddly) FALSE NOSE the B-Side (or double A side maybe) of the Dangerous Brothers hit county councillor  from1980.
